The New Face(s) of Game Night

The overflowing cups; the drinking til we puke and the excessive laughter. Those are all characteristics that are reminiscent of past Game Nights and they were all very much present, this past weekend, as our group of friends gathered for a night of fun. They were just slightly different: sippy cups overturned with milk spilling out; little ones puking all over the furniture and our laughter echoing off the walls as we excitedly watched our children play together. Game Nights sure have changed.

When we were all planning to gather for the night, we determined it would be OK to have the littles tag along. In theory, they would entertain eachother and it would be a fun experience for them, as well.

Not so much.

Here is a little rundown of how Game Night actually went:

  • We had full intention on being on time…hell, we may even be 10 min early for once. Nope, we were 15 min late. Our child had to eat before we went and she really had no intention of making sure we arrived on time.
  • While the adults daddies and those with no children congregated around the kitchen table (ready and raring to play some freaking games,) us mommies hung out in the living room playing with blocks and tractors.
  • An hour later, we were finally at the kitchen table, with kids on hips. Because, you can’t go anywhere without them, am I right?
  • It took us longer to figure out the rules to a game then we actually spent playing it.
  • Kids wanted down.
  • Kids wanted up.
  • We talked an awfully lot about our favorite brands of sippy cups, puke, daycare, and poop.
  • Kids wanted down.
  • Break for puke clean-up (child puke, not adult)
  • Switch games after 1-2 rounds of first game.
  • Nobody has had nearly enough wine to play second game, which includes humiliating oneself.
  • Kids wanted up.
  • Kids wanted down.
  • Second puke clean-up break. This kid is a freaking champ.
  • Everyone calls it a night after 1 round of second game.
  • We vow to get together soon, sans kids.

Game Night, date night, life in general; they all look so different now that our families are expanding. It’s oftentimes said that once you have kids it gets increasingly more difficult to find “us” time. While I agree with that, to a certain extent, I can’t think of a more perfect Game Night than this past weekend. Sure, it wasn’t traditional and it sure as hell didn’t play out as we had expected, but it was an experience. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Creating memories is at the top of my list and boys, did we ever create a bunch that night. And hell, I even remembered them all the next morning. Now that’s not something I could have said 5 years ago! Ü
