“What do you like to do for fun? Tell me about some of your hobbies…”
I recently got a new primary care physician and this was her opening line.
Well, that got awkward fast.
I had no clue what to say to her. I mean, I’m really great at being a mom? I can mom the shit out of any situation. Mom-ing is my life, literally. This one simple question made me realize the sad truth: I have no hobbies outside of being a mom. A hobby is typically something an individual enjoys doing in their leisure time. Yes, you read that right: leisure time. If you are a mom, I can imagine that you are laughing your butt off just as much as I did when I typed that. The extent of “leisure time” I get in a day is when I get to go to the bathroom alone.
I’ve been trying, ever since this awkward encounter, to come up with some really awesome answers that I can give the next time someone asks me this question. I think I’ve come up with some real contenders. Let me know what you think:
- Blocks and baby dolls are my favorite
- I can change a really mean diaper
- Cooking (with a child screaming at my feet)
- Eating chocolate, cake, cookies, etc behind closed doors
- Laundry
- Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins reruns
- Doing my hair & makeup (with a child screaming at my feet)
- Bathtime (preferably without the floating turds)
- Laundry
- Photography….of my children
- Naptime aka Netflix
- Laundry
- Getting lost in a good book, such as Llama Llama Red Pajama or Goodnight Moon
- Showering, in silence. It really is a luxury.
- Shopping (with a child screaming at my feet)
I mean, honestly, some of these are really great. Omit a few small details and I can sound like I have some pretty freaking fabulous hobbies. I don’t know, I think I’m on to something. Share some of your favorite mommy/parent hobbies with me 🙂
xo, Jess
